Digital Short Story 2022 | Rose Vincelli Gustine’s ‘Garlic Party’

The Digital Short Story ’22 exhibit includes 9 entertaining stories by the Class of ’23. Next up in our spotlight is Rose Vincelli Gustine’s ‘Garlic Party’.

THE STORY:

A love letter to the stinking rose, an ode to the odorific. Chefs, healers, and loud mouth women have a few things to teach us— and recipes to share. Through the lens of a houseparty, we meet some of garlic’s devotees – like Dona Abramson, grocery buyer for legendary Manhattan spice shop Kalustyan’s, herbalist Pardis Partow, and chef Natalie Hernandez of Bed Stuy’s Boca Santa. They, along with an array of friends and family, share their commitment to garlic, a healing plant, good luck charm, and the soul of the kitchen. Garlic is life!

THE STORYTELLER:

Rose Vincelli Gustine is a filmmaker’s advisor and producer. She is Director of Operations and on the faculty of SVA’s MFA Social Documentary Film program. She is currently producing the documentary feature The Sum of Our Parts, and has consulting produced several other films, including Busy Inside (Doc NYC, PBS “America Reframed” 2021). As a producer, Rose specializes in story structure and grant writing; distilling wide-ranging stories into spicy bites, and engaging audiences with multi-faceted slices of real life. Prior to her current work, Rose was a curator and producer of Gotham Film & Media Institute (neé IFP) including their Labs and Film Week programs; and a programmer for AFI Docs Festival. She lives, walks, and cooks with her family and cat in Brooklyn, NY.
