Meet Pat Dorian and then take his class, ‘Paper Puppet Animation’!

Meet Pat Dorian! He’s about to teach the coolest class of the summer, so we thought we’d introduce you.

Rowe Price, The New Yorker, Nike, Inc, MAD, Pantheon Books, Penguin, DC Comics, IDW Publishing, AMC Theatres, and McDonald’s. And now he’s teaching an amazing class, Paper Puppet Animation!

Stop-motion animation with paper puppets is a dynamic visual narrative format used by a wide range of artists-from the visionary pioneer Lotte Reiniger to Monty Python’s Terry Gilliam and the creative team behind South Park. In this course students will learn the skills to start making compelling stop-motion videos using a mobile phone and minimal equipment. The course will also examine gag writing and story structure. Through hands-on exercises that draw upon various visual disciplines, students will build and animate puppets by manipulating cut-outs, photographs, fabric, prints and drawings. We will discuss methods to share animations and help promote each student’s brand on popular social platforms.

PREREQUISITE: Basic drawing skills.

NOTE: Students must provide their own laptop and smartphone (digital camera optional).

The classes will take place Tuesdays, Jun 05 – Jul 31 from 6:30pm to 9:30pm at SVA, 136 West 21st Street.
