Fatima Z. Warraich

Visual and comic artist, filmmaker, singer-songwriter, and graphic designer

Fatima is a Pakistani American visual and comic artist, filmmaker, singer-songwriter, and graphic designer from Brookfield, Wisconsin. Her storytelling journey began long before she knew what it was, but she can say without a doubt that storytelling has consumed her; The way she felt captivated or moved by media she grew up with, stories her family would share, and a growing feeling of wanting to connect with people. In high school, her head filled with a grandiose epic about friendship and overcoming barriers to bring people together through comics thats she wishes to bring to into the world to this day, not knowing at the time how much it would mean to her. By the time she entered college at UW Madison, driven to understand herself, she led and involved others in her passion projects such as an independent group exhibition ‘Tiny Pleasures,’ focusing on work that shows how her characters and storytelling motivate her creativity and her life. As well as, performing and hosting an open mic night, using her voice and emotion to create a shared experience.

Since graduating, Fatima has learned to take ownership of her work and lean into the power of story. She has delved into various forms of storytelling, continuing to make art, comics and write and perform songs, while also expanding on foundational experiences in narrative. Recently, she co-wrote and produced a short narrative film titled “Experiences of Love,” which is currently in post-production. This project has really changed her approach to narrative creation. The details of world-building—considering everything from dialogue and character development to costumes, set design, and editing—have fascinated her in ways she never anticipated. What began as curiosity has evolved into a driving passion to tell and consume stories; wanting to have conversations about movies, books, and the themes that shape them. She craves discussions that explore the deeper meanings behind creative decisions and the impact they have on our understanding of ourselves and others.

Fatima has also started to integrate more of her cultural heritage into her work, enriching storytelling with personal significance. In a recent short film/comic, she explored the journey of a neurodivergent Pakistani immigrant girl, accompanied by a brightly dressed, playful boy—who symbolizes a version of herself that she struggles to acknowledge. To bring this narrative to life, she scanned her own Pakistani clothing to create a tapestry that serves as both a backdrop and a framework for the story, reminiscent of traditional Islamic architecture and illuminated manuscripts. The intricate patterns and vibrant colors weave into the frame during moments of deep connection between the characters, emphasizing the blurred lines between their artificially separated worlds.

As she grows as an artist and storyteller, her goal is to create work that not only reflects her personal experiences but also fosters empathy and connection in a fragmented world. By exploring the intricacies of visual narrative, She wants to challenge perceptions and provoke thought, contributing to conversations that bridge cultural divides.
