Afrida Ahmed
Afrida Ahmed is a printer and photographer born and raised in Queens, NYC. Ahmed received their BFA in Photography from the Fashion Institute of Technology and began printmaking in the darkrooms of the International Center of Photography and Penumbra Foundation. Their work explores identity, intimacy, and conflict with an emphasis on the methods and spaces used to make art. They assist workshops and programming at the ICP, as well as photo-assist on a freelance basis.
Ahmed encountered artists’ books and publishing while interning with Printed Matter, Inc. They’re drawn to small-press as a means of resistance to capitalism and white supremacy, using Riso as a tool to that end. Afrida began riso-printing at Secret Riso Club, a community-centered print and publishing house, where they continue to support studio operations.
