What awards and grants are offered by MFA Visual Narrative?
MFA Visual Narrative is a graduate program in School of Visual Arts, a leader in the education of artists, designers and creative professionals for more than seven decades. Sketchboard Pro Thesis Sponsorship Award
SVA and Braintreehouse, creators of Sketchboard Pro offers a generous sponsorship award to two MFA Visual Narrative thesis students. Each sponsorship consists of a $2500 thesis award and is accompanied by a new iPad Pro and Sketchboard Pro Artist Bundle. In addition, Braintreehouse artists are made available to the students for professional advice and mentorship. All MFA Visual Narrative students are eligible for an annual Sketchboard Pro product discount that also lasts one year beyond graduation for all alumni.
Educator’s Scholarship
Eligible candidates will be considered for scholarships providing up to 50% of tuition. The candidate must currently teach full-time with the equivalent of six credits or more per semester (online acceptable) in an accredited college or university with at least two years of teaching experience (international experience is acceptable). Candidates teaching at the K-12 level will be considered on a case-by-case basis and should contact the department outlining their relevant background.
The recommended deadline for all Class of 2027 graduate applications is January 15, 2025, however, applications received after this deadline will be reviewed on a space-available basis. If an applicant is interested in the Educator’s Scholarship, it is highly recommended they meet this deadline as these awards and acceptances will begin shortly thereafter.
Merit Scholarships
The department offers modest merit scholarships that are awarded to both incoming and returning second-year students based on academic and artistic merit. All incoming merit scholarships are awarded upon acceptance and there is no additional application needed. The application deadline is January 15, 2025, for first-round review and consideration for Summer 2025 acceptances, merit awards, and housing grants. However, applications received after this deadline will continue to be reviewed for acceptance and considered for awards as long as space and awards remain available.
If an applicant is seeking merit, educators and/or housing scholarship funds, it is highly recommended they meet this first-round review deadline.

Summer SVA Housing Grant
For summer 2025, a limited number of SVA on-campus housing grants are available to both incoming and returning students who live outside of Manhattan and the surrounding boroughs. SVA housing grants provide on-campus housing for the duration of the 2025 MFAVN summer intensive semester only.
