Eric Baker joins the MFAVN family!
We’d like to welcome our newest faculty member, Eric Baker! Eric is a designer, writer and educator and is principal of Eric Baker Design Associates, Inc., a design firm established in 1986.
He is co-author of the books Trademarks of the 20’s & 30’s and Trademarks of the 40’s & 50’s and author of Great Inventions/Good Intentions, An Illustrated History of American Design Patents and Hitting The Road, The Art of The American Road Map. His book Invitation to The Voyage – A Poem Illustrated by Charles Baudelaire was published by Bulfinch Press, “You’re The Top” by Cole Porter was published by Simon & Schuster Editions. His most recent book, American Trademarks, A Compendium, was published by Chronicle Books of San Francisco.
For the past 20 years Mr. Baker has been a professor at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan and teaches courses on The History of Graphic Design, Typography and Branding. He is also an adjust professor of design at SUNY, Purchase.
He is frequent a judge at numerous design competitions and lecturers frequently at various national and international conferences and design schools. In 2014 Mr. Baker delivered the keynote address for 100th anniversary of The American Institute of Graphic Arts.
A two time recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Design Grant for his independent design history projects, his work has appeared in Print, Communication Arts, How, Domus, ID Magazine, Metropolis, Blueprint, The New York Art Directors Annual, British Design and Art Direction, The New York Times, Vanity Fair and Graphis. For over six years Mr. Baker was Design Director of the weekly news magazine The New Republic.
Mr. Baker is also founder, principal and curator of lost image desk, a creative image research service for designers, architects and art directors.
A native of California Mr. Baker studied at the San Francisco Academy of Art and the California College of Arts and Crafts. In 2014 he was awarded and honorary doctorate from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco for his contributions to design and design education.
Mr. Baker is an active member of The American Institute of Graphic Arts and is a past Board Member of the New York Chapter.
