Half Light

Half Light is a magical realism story about grief, dreams, and sibling relationships.

19 year old Gabriel is struggling to deal with the loss of his grandmother.

He and his twin sister Ellie struggle to deal with their drastically different experiences of grief, making it difficult for them to understand and not resent one another.

Deep in his mourning, Gabriel discovers an ability to see his late grandmother again in a mysterious, otherworldly space in his dreams…

Exhibition Process

As part of our group exhibition Creatures of Story, I brought my pages to life by creating an atmospheric light box that people could walk around. The light inside illuminates the pages.

I drafted two different types of wooden flats before eventually deciding on the “Hollywood” style flat. I built the individual flats in SVA’s Visible Futures Lab and assembled the structure in the gallery. The next task was to print composite images taken from the comic at a large scale and on paper that could be lit from the inside. I ended up printing at the Visible Futures Lab as well as SVA’ s Wilde Lab. The images are printed on 3 by 8 newsprint sheets and attached to the wooden frame from the inside.
