Andrea Dezsö

Visual Artist

Andrea Dezsö is a visual artist who works across a broad range of media including drawing, painting, artist’s books, embroidery, cut paper, animation, sculpture, site-specific installation and public art. Dezsö‘s permanent public art has been installed in two New York City subway stations, at the United States Embassy in Bucharest, Romania and at CUNY BMCC Fiterman Hall in Lower Manhattan. Community Garden, Dezsö‘s mosaic in the New York City subway was recognized as Best American Public Art in 2007 by Americans for the Arts. Dezsö exhibits in museums and galleries around the world, and is represented by the Nancy Margolis Gallery in New York and Pucker Gallery in Boston. Dezsö is Associate Professor of Art at Hampshire College in Amherst, MA and maintains studios in NYC and in Western Massachusetts.

    In the Air

    Permanent public art • City University of New York BMCC Fiterman Hall Atriums • 2014

    The aim of In the Air, 6 large mosaic murals installed at Fiterman Hall – rebuilt after damage sustained during the 9/11 attacks – was to remind people using the building that the sky in Lower Manhattan still contains beautiful living things.

    Mamushka has been translated into Hungarian and published by Csimota Publishing House in Budapest, Hungary.

    Hand-cut and sewn, collapsible, multi-layered one-of-a-kind tunnel book  14.25 x 11 x 7 inches

    When popped open, multi-layered paper tunnel books reveal miniature worlds viewers can peek into as into dioramas. Structurally, tunnel books belong in the same family as carousel books and toy theaters and were extremely popular during the Victorian era. Andrea Dezsö has been creating one of a kind tunnel books since 2004.
