Mikey Please

independent animator mikey please’s haunting work

Mikey Please is an independent animator in London. His work caught my eye when he showed up in a Google alert titled “unusual animation.” Google done did good. They pegged Please’s work. Dead-on.

What got me interested is an elegance to the style. It pulls you in because it’s visually pleasing, BUT you need to stare at it for a moment to get what it is that you’re seeing. For instance. My first impression of Please’s work was this still.

Mikey Please

The paper-like glow of the character caught my eye and kept it, then I realized the huge size of the character when the trees came into view. I decided to watch his shorts to see if the animated work could match that depth.

Yup.

How does he get this effect? Hell if I know. I even watched this short and still can’t quite make out what he’s working with, but it isn’t pixels.

So what is he working on these days? From his Facebook page:

Friends… A new trailer for MARILYN MYLLER, to celebrate it’s UK Premiere at The Edinburgh Film Festival tomorrow.

A year in the making, the full six minute stopmotion short features the voice of Josie Long, one zillion hand carved tiny things, literally tens of carved foam puppets [editor’s note: OH! FOAM!], two eye fulls of in-camera, long-exposure light trickery and a pair of tiny dolphins, smooching”

He’s also working with Vine, which I still have to get around to myself.

You can see all of his current work on Mikey Please’s website. You can also follow him and his active Twitterness at @MisterPlease.
